Although the city of Barcelona is easier to navigate than many other European cities, it is still easy to get lost among the labyrinth of pretty streets and the Modernist architecture. Your eyes can easily be averted from your route due to the many picturesque and ornate buildings, bustling bodegas, and luxury boutiques. However, before you run back to your Barcelona accommodation<\/a> wondering where it all went wrong, try using these handy Spanish phrases which will help you get from A to B in no time at all.<\/p>\n

If you do feel a little lost and have been wandering around for hours, there are easy phrases to help you get back on track. The simple \u201cWhere is\u201d phrase is easy to remember and will ensure you reach your desired destination.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u00bfD\u00f3nde est\u00e1?<\/em>\u201d \u2013 Where is\u2026?<\/p>\n

For example, you may be looking for the bus station to take a day trip out of the city or just to get from one neighbourhood to another. This is how you would ask for directions to the bus station.<\/p>\n

\u00bfD\u00f3nde est\u00e1 la estaci\u00f3n de ferrocarril?<\/em><\/p>\n

You can also substitute the word \u201cferrocarril\u201d for \u201cautobuses\u201d if you prefer, as it may be easier to remember!<\/p>\n

If you wish to catch a train, the easiest phrase to use in Barcelona is the name of the main train station itself, Barcelona Sants. The word for \u201ctrain\u201d is also super easy to remember: el tren<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What if you are seeking a specific landmark or street? Say you were looking for the Sagrada Familia Cathedral or Las Ramblas: You simply say \u00bfD\u00f3nde est\u00e1 La Sagrada Familia de Gaudi?<\/em> or \u00bfD\u00f3nde est\u00e1 Las Ramblas?<\/em><\/p>\n

Now the only problem you may encounter is when the Catalan person you asked for direction responds in Catalan. Once they realize you are a tourist, they usually will respond in Spanish rather than Catalan.<\/p>\n

In response to your question \u201cWhere is Gaudi\u2019s Sagrada Familia?\u201d they may reply:<\/p>\n

A la izquierda<\/em> \u2013 to the left
\nA la derecha<\/em> \u2013 to the right
\nOr la primera izquierda\/derecha<\/em> \u2013 the first left\/right
\nDerecho<\/em> \u2013 straight ahead
\nA la esquina<\/em> \u2013 on the corner<\/p>\n

They may even tell you how many blocks away it is: \u201cuna\/dos\/tres cuadras<\/em>\u201d, which means one, two or three blocks.<\/p>\n

if you get really stuck, bring out a notepad and ask them to write numbers of buses\/metro trams or even draw you a map. You could also take the easy way out and use a translation app on your mobile phone.<\/p>\n

Other places you may be looking for during your city travels, especially if you don\u2019t wish to cook in your Barcelona holiday rental. <\/a>Use the same phrase again:<\/p>\n

\u00bfD\u00f3nde est\u00e1 un restaurante?<\/em> … then add the name at the end.
\nIt\u2019s the same if you are looking for a specific street name \u201cDonde esta la calle<\/em>\u201d? Or el Barrio G\u00f3tico<\/em> if you are looking for the Gothic quarter.<\/p>\n

Perhaps you need to withdraw some funds from the ATM: bank is easy to remember – the Spanish word is \u201cel banco<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n
